SRINAGAR, Sept 26 (NNN-XINHUA) – Two militants were yesterday killed, in a gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gunfight broke out between government forces and militants, at village Sirhama of Anantnag district, about 68 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
“Yesterday evening a gunfight broke out at village Sirhama here. No sooner than the contingents of police and paramilitary reached the suspected area, the gunfight began,” a police official said.
“The operation was suspended late night, in the wake of the darkness and resumed this morning (yesterday morning). In the heavy exchange of fire between the two sides two militants were killed.”
According to police, the government forces have not suffered any damage in the standoff.
A guerrilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.– NNN-XINHUA
