Since last May’s election, political and economic instability in Venezuela has intensified, reaching in recent days the moment of greater tension with direct threats of intervention from the United States.

This happened after National Assembly Speaker, Juan Guaidó proclaimed himself interim president of Venezuela, claiming to be occupying a position that had been usurped and demanding new free elections.

The streets of Caracas were “taken” by demonstrators who also demanded the downfall of President Nicolas Maduro who has already stated that he will not relinquish power.

Since then, about 50 countries have already recognized Guaidó as president, and another eight support the current government.

The protests are growing in the country and it is estimated that 35 people have already died as a result of the crackdown. — NNN-ANGOP
