U.S.: Peru is key player to restore democracy in Venezuela

LIMA, Feb 19 (NNN-ANDINA) — The Peruvian Government is a key player in Lima Group’s efforts to restore democracy and social peace in Venezuela, U.S. Ambassador to Peru Krishna R. Urs has pointed out.

In this sense, the diplomat noted the Inca country’s convening power to call the region’s nations and its ability to forge unity among them in order to make progress in the political and democratic process, which will guide the Bolivarian country into a transition government.

Likewise, he indicated Lima Group and Peru’s role should not be underestimated, as it was very significant at the start of this new stage in Venezuela.

Furthermore, the U.S. official underlined the support for Interim President Juan Guaido began with Lima Group and has now extended to 52 nations, including the United States, as well as the European Union.

The Ambassador also informed the North American country has so far contributed with over US$7.6 million in funds to Peru for the humanitarian and integration response plan aimed at Venezuelans in the Inca nation.

It should be noted the United States provides support to Venezuelans in 17 countries in the region, including Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, among others.

On Jan 4, the group announced it would not recognize the legitimacy of Maduro’s new government. The Organization of American States (OAS) adopted the same stance

Thus, Peru banned the entry of Maduro and 99 members of his regime —including their relatives— to its territory.

It also withdrew its Charge d’Affaires from Venezuela and deemed the Maduro administration as a dictatorship. — NNN-ANDINA
