President Alpha Condé has been cleared for a third term bid in next month’s election.
CONAKRY, Sept 11 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Guinea’s constitutional court, the highest in the West African country, has approved 82-year-old President Alpha Condé’s bid for a third term in next month’s election.
The court also approved 11 other candidates, including the main opposition challenger Cellou Dalein Diallo.
There have been months of protests against Condé’s re-election bid after he pushed through a constitutional change in a referendum in March which allowed him to stand for a third term.
At least 30 people are reported to have died from the protests.
Condé was first elected in 2010 and got re-elected in 2015.
Some ECOWAS leaders have criticized the decision of some colleagues to run for third terms.
The concerns were expressed at a summit of leaders of the regional bloc in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
The comments follow decisions by Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara and Guinea’s President Alpha Condé to run for third terms in their respective countries despite protests.
There have been protests in Ivory Coast following President Ouattara’s decision to run for a third term following the sudden death of his preferred successor.
On Tuesday Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari had called on West African leaders to stick to their constitutional term limits – which he termed as a source of crisis and political tension in the region. — NNN-AGENCIES
