CAIRO, Egypt, Feb 18 (NNN-MENA) – Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, stressed that, the pan-Arab body is completely against the presence of any foreign troops in Syria.
Aboul-Gheit’s comments came, during a session on the Syrian crisis, which was held as part of the three-day Munich Security Conference, which ended on Sunday in Germany, Arab League Spokesman, Mahmoud Afifi, said in a statement.
The Adana agreement, signed between Turkey and Syria in 1998, provides an ideal solution, after the withdrawal of the U.S. troops from Syria, Afifi quoted Aboul-Gheit as saying.
The bilateral anti-terror protocol was signed, after Turkey threatened to intervene militarily, if the Syrian government did not end its support to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its sheltering for the PKK leader, Abdullah Ocalan, on its territories.
During the session, Aboul-Gheit also said, the agreement addresses Turkey’s security-related issues without jeopardising the regional integration of Syria.
The session was attended by Lebanese and Turkish defence ministers, the U.S. envoy to Syria, Russia’s deputy foreign minister and the UN envoy to Syria.– NNN-MENA
