CARACAS, Sept 5 (NNN-Xinhua) — Venezuela is to request the extradition of four citizens recently captured in Colombia who have been accused of involvement in a coup attempt, Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab said.
“We have asked the competent courts of Venezuela, and we will do the same through diplomatic channels, the return of these four criminals linked to criminal acts,” the prosecutor said at a press conference, adding that Venezuelan authorities “have publicly and through diplomatic channels reported the activities of these people in Colombia, who were fugitives from Venezuelan justice.”
The four detainees are accused of “being organizers and financiers” of camps where military deserters and mercenaries were trained to carry out the sea attack known as Operation Gideon, an act aimed at overthrowing the Venezuelan government on April 30, he said.
Colombian authorities on Thursday announced the arrests of four Venezuelan nationals for their alleged role in arming and training mercenaries who invaded neighboring Venezuela, according to media reports. — NNN-XINHUA
