NAY PYI TAW, Sept 3 (NNN-MNA) – Nearly 7,000 candidates will compete in Myanmar’s upcoming general election, scheduled for Nov 8, an official from the Union Election Commission told a press briefing.
“A total of 6,689 candidates from political parties and 280 individuals, totalling 6,969, will run in the upcoming general election, and election campaign will be launched soon,” U Myint Naing, member of Union Election Commission, said.
Of them, 1,934 candidates will compete for the House of Representatives (Lower House), 976 candidates for the House of Nationalities (Upper House), 3,847 candidates for state or region parliaments, and 212 candidates for ethnic minority, in state or region parliaments, he added.
About 37 million people are eligible to vote in the upcoming general election.
Myanmar’s previous general election was held in Nov, 2015, in which Aung San Suu Kyi-led ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party won the absolute majority of the parliamentary seats and has run the government since 2016.
The five-year term of the incumbent NLD government will end in Mar, 2021.– NNN-MNA
