In recent days, Brazil managed to slightly reduce the average daily deaths caused by the pandemic, although the number of infections increased considerably.

President Ivan Duque called on the public to comply with social distancing and staying-at-home recommendations for suspected COVID-19 sufferers as strict lockdown measures are set to be lifted Tuesday throughout the country to reactivate the economy.

“We are on the verge of starting a new phase this week: selective isolation with responsible individual distancing. We know that what will mark our success is going to be responsibility shared among what the government does, what employers do and what we all do in our family and individual orbit,” Duque said.

Duque announced earlier that lockdown restrictions would be eased starting September.

MEXICO reported on Sunday 4,129 more COVID-19 cases and 339 additional deaths, taking its national tally to 595,841 and death toll to 64,158, its health ministry said.

Mexico now has the third-largest COVID-19 death toll, only after the United States and Brazil. The government has said the real number of infections is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases.

Mexico’s economy is facing a “high degree of uncertainty” as it is still difficult to predict the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact that the virus containment measures will have, Banxico, the central bank of Mexico, said in a report on Wednesday.

The country’s gross domestic product fell 18.7 percent in the second quarter compared with the same period of 2019, weakened by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.
