Three Militants, Trooper Killed In Indian-Controlled Kashmir Gunfight

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug 29 (NNN-PTI) – Three militants and a trooper were killed early today, in a fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out at Zadoora village of Pulwama district, about 40 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

“In an overnight gunfight that continued until early morning, three militants were killed in Zadoora,” a police official, posted in Pulwama, said. “While fighting the militants a trooper was wounded. He was immediately removed to hospital. He, however, succumbed to his wound there.”

According to the police, the village was cordoned off on specific intelligence information, suggesting the presence of militants.

Today’s killings put the number of killed militants in two gunfights to seven in the past 24 hours in the region.

Yesterday four militants were killed in a similar gunfight with government forces in adjacent Shopian district.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.– NNN-PTI
