Nepal Reports Record High Fatality From COVID-19 As Cases Surpass 30,000 Mark

KATHMANDU, Aug 22 (NNN-NEPALNEWS) – The Nepali government, confirmed the record-high single day fatality of 11 deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 137.

As the COVID-19 pandemic started to spread among the different clusters of communities in recent days, the fatality rate has also jumped sharply.

“Eleven people, including a woman died of COVID-19 in the last 24-hours,” Jageshwor Gautam, spokesperson at the Ministry of Health and Population said. Previous single day high was on Aug 12, when eight people died, according to the ministry.

Gautam said, the infections are spreading among people in communities and people of all walks of lives, including young and old people, as well as, people with existing conditions, which resulted in increased deaths.

“In the past, infections were largely confined among migrant Nepali workers, who returned home. Because of their young age, their immunity power was high and death rate was low,” he said.

On May 16, Nepal had reported the first death from the pandemic. A 29-year-old woman was the first to die from the pandemic in Nepal.

Until July 21, since the first death, Nepal reported a total of 40 deaths. But, after the lock-down was lifted on July 22, allowing almost all economic and social activities to operate largely without restrictions, death toll also started to climb rapidly, along with re-surging in COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases in Nepal crossed 30,000 yesterday, as the cases are re-surging across the Himalayan country, according to the health ministry. “With new 838 cases, total COVID-19 cases in the country reached 30,483,” said Gautam.

Amid rising cases of COVID-19, local administration of several districts issued prohibitory orders, to control movement of people by suspending both public and private transportation services and suspending most other economic and social activities.– NNN-NEPALNEWS
