No Virus Found From Thais In Contact With Infected Malaysian Visitor: Health Authorities

BANGKOK, Aug 20 (NNN-TNA) – The Thai Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said that, through contact tracing, they have not found any COVID-19 infection among those who had been in close contact with a Malaysian man who tested positive.

The 46-year-old Malaysian visited Thailand and returned to Kuala Lumpur on Aug 5, only to find out he tested positive for COVID-19.

“We found the Thai girlfriend of the Malaysian visitor in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Mai,” said Chiang Mai governor, Charoenrit Sanguansat. “We asked her to take a test and the results were negative. She is currently at a hospital, while her friends who came in close contact with her have been instructed to self-quarantine.”

Thailand recorded 86 days without local transmission, but the latest case sparked fear of a second wave of infections.

The CCSA said, the Malaysian man was a frequent visitor to Thailand, with his latest entry logged on Mar 6.

The CCSA said, the man might have caught the virus after returning to Malaysia.

“The man left Thailand on Aug 5, but the Malaysian authorities diagnosed him with COVID-19 on Aug 15,” said the CCSA.

The Ministry of Public Health’s Disease Control Department said, officials will coordinate with their Malaysian counterparts for more information regarding the patient’s test results and other relevant information.

Cumulative infections in Thailand have been 3,382 to date, with 3,199 recoveries and 58 deaths.

Meanwhile, 125 patients are still being treated in hospital.– NNN-TNA
