HONG KONG, Aug 5 (NNN-XINHUA) – The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has been accelerating in the Asia Pacific, as the Philippines reported a record high of 6,352 new cases, yesterday, and India announced over 50,000 infections for the sixth consecutive day.
The number of cases in the Philippines surged to 112,593, after the Department of Health (DOH) reported a record high of 6,352 new cases.
The DOH said that the number of recoveries rose to 66,049 after 240 patients survived the disease.
The death toll also increased to 2,115 after 11 more patients succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH added.
Yesterday, the government reimposed stricter lock-down measures in Metro Manila and adjacent provinces of Laguna, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan, due to the steady spike in cases in these areas. People in these areas in the main island of Luzon are urged to stay at home.
More than 27 million people are affected by the lock-down, which will remain in place for two weeks.
In India, the total cases rose to 1,855,745 as 52,050 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours. The country recorded 803 deaths during the same period, bringing the national death toll to 38,938.
Yesterday was the sixth consecutive day when over 50,000 fresh cases were detected across the country in a single day.
There is a total of 586,298 active cases in the country. So far, 1,230,509 people are cured and discharged from hospitals, said the health ministry.
The confirmed cases in Indonesia rose by 1,922 within one day to 115,056, with the death toll adding by 86 to 5,388, the health ministry said.
According to the ministry, 1,813 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 72,050.
The virus has spread to all the country’s 34 provinces.
Bangladesh’s total cases reached 244,020, with 1,918 new cases reported, and deaths from the virus increased to 3,234.
Senior Health Ministry official, Nasima Sultana, said that, 50 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh. She said, the total number of recovered patients stands at 139,860 with 1,955 new recoveries.
Afghanistan reported 36 newly-confirmed cases, taking the country’s total to 36,782, the country’s Ministry of Public Health said.
The ministry said, during the past 24 hours, 187 tests were conducted, of which 15 positive cases are from western Herat province and 21 positive cases are from the capital Kabul.
A total of 1,288 deaths have been recorded, since the outbreak of the pandemic in Feb, but no deaths were reported within the past 24 hours.
South Korea reported 34 more cases, as of midnight Tuesday, compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 14,423.
Of the new cases, 21 were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 2,482. The imported cases grew in double figures for 40 straight days since June 26.
No more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 301. The total fatality rate stood at 2.09 percent.– NNN-XINHUA
