Kuwait Holds Seminar To Discuss Women’s Empowerment

KUWAIT, July 14 (NNN-KUNA) – Kuwait launched on Monday, a virtual seminar to address empowerment of women in politics.

The seminar, entitled “Prospects for political participation of women in Kuwait,” is co-organised by the European Union (EU) and Qatar, and will last until July 15 (tomorrow).

EU supports the political participation of women around the world, said EU Ambassador to Kuwait and Qatar, Cristian Tudor, in a press statement.

“Kuwait was one of the first countries in the region to grant women their full political rights. I hope Kuwait will continue its efforts to encourage women’s political participation and support policies that support gender equality,” he noted.

On his part, Talal Al-Mutairi, assistant foreign minister for Human Rights of Kuwait, affirmed Kuwait’s relations with the EU in many fields, indicating Kuwait’s keenness to continue to raise the level of cooperation and exchange of experiences, especially in the field of human rights issues.

Lubna Al-Qadi, director of the Centre for Women’s Research and Studies, at the College of Social Sciences at Kuwait University, said that, since the United Nations launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it has been decided to include these goals in the national development plan for Kuwait, including support for the empowerment of women.

“At present, the percentage of women in leadership positions increased from 12 to 15 percent, after two women occupied ministerial seats and one member in the Kuwaiti parliament,” she said.

“We hope that more female candidates for parliament can succeed in the upcoming elections,” she noted.– NNN-KUNA
