Fiji Reports One New COVID-19 Case

SUVA, July 6 (NNN-SPI NEWS) – Fiji confirmed today, one new COVID-19 case, one month after the island nation declared it was free of the virus.

Fiji’s Acting Permanent Secretary for the Health Ministry, James Fong, announced today that, a 66-year-old man, who returned from India on Saturday, tested positive on Sunday and he is now isolated in a hospital in Nadi, Fiji’s third largest city.

The man’s son, who has also been tested, the result will be out tomorrow (Tuesday), is currently in the Nadi hospital for isolation.

The man returned from India on a repatriation flight carrying 107 passengers, and the other passengers also remained in quarantine. They have all been tested and the Health Ministry is awaiting the results.

The case, the 19th in the country, was categorised as a border quarantine case, Fong said, adding that, the ministry does not expect it to be Fiji’s last border quarantine case.

As of June, Fiji had reported 18 COVID-19 cases, since it confirmed the first one on Mar 19. The island nation, on June 5, declared itself free of COVID-19, after the remaining three patients had fully recovered.

According to the Health Ministry, Fiji conducted more than 4,500 COVID-19 tests since Jan.

The ministry also confirmed that it spent up to four million Fijian dollars (about 1.8 million U.S. dollars) in its overall response to COVID-19, including paying for quarantine facilities.

Currently, Fiji still maintains the nationwide curfew from Mar 30.– NNN-SPI NEWS
