Covid-19: Bangladesh cases cross 100,000 mark

DHAKA, June 19 (NNN-BSS) — Bangladesh on Thursday exceeded 100,000 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases as 3,803 more people tested positive overnight.

“The tally of infections has surged to 102,292 after 3,803 new COVID-19 cases were detected in the past 24 hours,” DGHS Additional Director General Prof Nasima Sultana told a virtual media briefing at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in the city.

She said 38 more fatalities were reported during the period, raising the death toll from the pandemic to 1,343.

Among the 38 deaths, 14 are male and 18 female, the health official said adding, two are in his 20s, five in their 30s, three in their 40s, six in their 50s, 14 in their 60s, five in their 70s and two in their 80s while one is below 10.

Nasima said the recovery count rose to 40,164 after another 1,975 patients were discharged from the hospitals in the same period.

Among the total infections, 39.26 percent patients have recovered, while 1.31 percent died so far since the first COVID-19 positive cases were reported in the country on March 8, she said.

As of June 16, Dhaka city has been considered as the worst-affected with 24,504 COVID cases, according to Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).

Bangladesh confirmed the first coronavirus death on March 18, ten days after the detection of the first COVID-19 cases.

As of Thursday, 451,926 have died so far from the COVID-19 outbreak and there are 8,428,380 currently confirmed cases in 212 countries and territories, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics. — NNN-AGENCIES
