Bangladesh’s Daily COVID-19 Cases Break New Record as tally in India surpass 80,000

DHAKA, May 16 (NNN-BSS) – The number of new COVID-19 infections in Bangladesh rose by 1,202, as the total number of cases exceeded 20,000.

India reported 100 more deaths, besides fresh 3,967 positive cases reported since Thursday, said official data issued by India’s federal health ministry.

For other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the Indonesian government announced 490 new confirmed cases, bringing the total number of infections to 16,496.

Afghanistan’s Public Health Ministry registered 414 new positive cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of patients infected with the disease to 6,053, deputy to spokesman for the ministry, Tawhid Shakohmand, said.

The Philippines reported 215 more cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 12,091 in the country.

Myanmar’s Yangon region government announced the relaxation of two hours, in a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed in the region, amid the fear of infectious COVID-19 spread.

Malaysia reported another 36 new cases, bringing the national total to 6,855, the Health Ministry said.

Singapore’s Duke-NUS Medical School, launched a new rapid test kit to search infections with COVID-19 by locating neutralising antibodies, within one hour.

Sydney began to ease some restrictions from Friday, allowing people to go to some beaches, pubs and eateries for recreational activities, while authorities warned the infection rate could rise if people become complacent.

The confirmed cases in Japan increased by 50 to reach 16,253, according to the latest figures from the health ministry.

South Korea reported 27 more cases compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 11,018. The daily caseload hovered around 30 for six straight days as a cluster infection was found from clubs and bars at the multicultural neighbourhood of Itaewon in Seoul.

New Zealand reported one more case, after three consecutive days of zero cases in the country, said a statement by the Ministry of Health, leaving the country’s combined total of confirmed and probable cases at 1,498, of which 1,148 are confirmed.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health confirmed 25 new cases on Friday, bringing the total in the country to 313, with no deaths reported.– NNN-BSS
