ABUJA, May 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Ibrahim Gambari as his new chief of staff, secretary to the government said.

Gambari was Nigeria’s minister for external affairs during Buhari’s military regime from 1984 to 1985 and later became an under-secretary-general at the United Nations.

He replaces Abba Kyari, who died last month after contracting the coronavirus and was one of the most powerful men in Nigeria, acting as a gatekeeper to the president.

Nigeria’s coronavirus related deaths have increased from 150 to 158.

Confirmed coronavirus cases in Nigeria have also increased to 4,787 after the country recorded some 146 new cases.

This is according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

In a tweet on Tuesday night, May 12, the Centre says some 959 persons have been discharged. — NNN-AGENCIES
