COVID-19 Cases In Japan Rise By 70 To 15,847

TOKYO, May 11 (NNN-NHK) – The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 70, to reach 15,847, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities on Sunday.

The number excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo.

The nationwide death toll from the virus has reached a total of 646, including 13 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

In Tokyo, the epicentre of Japan’s outbreak, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased by 22 to 4,868, the eighth consecutive day of rising by less than 100. Osaka Prefecture followed with 1,743 infections.

Kanagawa Prefecture, meanwhile, recorded 1,169 infections, Saitama 964, Hokkaido 954 cases, Chiba 874, while Hyogo Prefecture recorded 693 cases, according to the latest figures, on Sunday.

The health ministry said, there are currently a total of 270 patients considered severely ill and are on ventilators or in intensive care units.

The ministry also said that in total, 8,778 people, including 651 from the cruise ship, have been discharged from hospitals, after their symptoms improved.– NNN-NHK
