TEHRAN, May 9 (NNN-IRNA) – At least two were killed in a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Damavand town, 69 km east of Iran’s capital Tehran, in the early hours of Friday morning, the state TV reported.
The two victims, a 60-year-old man in the town of Gilavand and a 21-year-old woman in Tehran, died from head injury and heart failure, respectively.
Meanwhile, 38 others were injured in the quake that panicked residents in Tehran and nearby towns.
The focus of the earthquake, with the depth of seven km, was 35.777 degrees north latitude, and 52.045 degrees east longitude, according to Iran’s Seismological Centre.
The main tremor, the location of which was south of Iran’s highest mountain, Mount Damavand, was followed by at least 30 aftershocks, ranging from 2.5 to 3.9 magnitude, forcing many people to stay out of their homes and in their cars overnight.
According to the report, the earthquake did not damage the infrastructure but caused cracks in some aged buildings.
The quake was felt in the provinces of Alborz, Qom, Qazvin and Mazandaran in the neighbourhood of Tehran, Iran’s Red Crescent Society said.– NNN-IRNA
