CAJAMARCA (Peru), Feb 7 (NNN-ANDINA) — Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra affirmed his administration will support 15 major irrigation projects across the country so as to improve agricultural sector and further stimulate economic growth.
Speaking at a Muni-Executive meeting in Cajamarca region —the first one with newly-elected local authorities— he said that one of these projects is the Chonta dam —an irrigation infrastructure that will directly benefit Cajamarca farmers.
Vizcarra guaranteed S/500 million (around US$150 million) for the project —through the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation— in order to initiate the corresponding works.
“We have made a list of the 15 most important irrigation projects all over Peru, which will be launched in this Government term and will be given top priority,” he said.
He praised Cajamarca region for its progress in reducing childhood anemia, thanks to changes in the population’s eating habits, which must be an example replicated across the country.
In his speech, the president noted that only S/1 billion (about US$300 million) out of S/1.850 billion (about US$555 million) destined for 2018 works in Cajamarca have been spent; therefore, every effort should be made to improve public spending this year.
Asked about mayors‘ salaries in the Inca country, the leader affirmed “there should not be second-class mayors,” as they all have the same responsibilities and should have the conditions necessary to develop their fullest potential.
He explained salary improvements should be granted to mayors in remote areas, those whose salary barely reaches S/1,100 (around US$330) —a situation that must change for equity reasons since they earn less than other professionals.
Vizcarra also announced that an intensive reforestation campaign will be carried out across Peru.
During a tree planting ceremony in Jesus district (Cajamarca region), the Head of State stressed that trees can help preserve water throughout the region, which can be used for agricultural purposes and human consumption.
“We must reforest our highlands and jungle. The region that showed us that reforestation is possible is Cajamarca, which has a successful experience,” the top official expressed.
Likewise, Vizcarra pointed out Cajamarca is a region with great potential and rich in diverse resources, although figures show the region is struggling with poverty.
“This is unacceptable, but with everyone’s support, we will change this situation and bring the well-being and progress that all Cajamarca inhabitants deserve,” he added.
Furthermore, he reaffirmed the Executive Branch’s commitment to supporting Cajamarca region and helping its authorities to do so.
Lastly, President Vizcarra reiterated his anti-corruption message and said he hopes to be recognized as the government that fought this scourge the most. — NNN-ANDINA
