ABUJA, May 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Africa has 47,581 cases of the Novel Coronavirus and 1,862 deaths, according to data released by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The death toll from the Coronavirus has risen in several nations as the continent continues to grapple with the pandemic.
In the last 24 hours, 352 new cases and 10 deaths were reported in South Africa, 53 cases and seven deaths in Guinea and 53 new infections and seven deaths in Chad, according to officials in those countries.
Confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nigeria have reached 2,950 after 148 new cases were recorded.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said that deaths related to the virus were 98 while 481 persons have been discharged.
Kenya’s government has identified two areas – one in the capital, Nairobi, and one in the coastal city of Mombasa – that will be shut off for 15 days to try and contain the spread of coronavirus.
It believes the two areas, Eastleigh, a Somali-dominated suburb of Nairobi and Mombasa’s Old Town, have become centres for infection.
In Eastleigh, there are 68 cases of the virus and in Old Town there are 64 out of a national total of 582.
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s health ministry has confirmed 92 new coronavirus cases in the country, its highest single-day increase since the outbreak began in March.
Some 69 cases were detected in the capital, Kinshasa, and another 23 cases in the south-west province of Kongo Central.
The country has to date confirmed 705 cases and 34 deaths.
The Ethiopian Football Federation has announced that all league competitions in the country are cancelled due to Coronavirus pandemic.
The decision was arrived at following a discussion in person and via video conference with all respective parties, including the Ethiopian Premier League.
Ethiopia has recorded 140 positive cases of the virus.
More than 3.65 million cases have been reported in 187 countries and regions since the virus emerged in Wuhan, China last December, with the US and Europe the world’s hardest-hit areas.
Nearly 1.2 million people have recovered, but the virus has claimed more than 256,000 lives, according to data compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University. — NNN-AGENCIES
