HONG KONG, May 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) – More confirmed COVID-19 cases were recorded in the Asia-Pacific countries on Wednesday, with the biggest daily jumps seen in Bangladesh and Nepal.
The number of new infections in Bangladesh rose by 790, the highest daily increase since Mar 8, bringing the total infections to 11,719.
Three deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across the country, taking fatalities to 186.
Nepal also witnessed the largest single day spike as 17 positive cases were reported, bringing the total number of cases to 99.
The Himalayan country has been recording a surge in confirmed cases in recent days, as it reported a single day spike of 16 cases on Sunday.
Indonesia confirmed 367 new cases, bringing the total to 12,438, the government said on Wednesday.
A total of 895 deaths have been recorded, an increase of 23 over the past 24 hours.
Malaysia recorded 135 COVID-19 patients, who had been cured and discharged, bringing the total to 4,702 or 73.1 percent of all cases, according to the Health Ministry.
A total of 45 new cases were reported, bringing the total cases to 6,428, of which 1,619 are still receiving treatment.
Of the new cases, 44 are local transmissions while the remaining one is an imported case.
The Philippines recorded 320 new infections, raising the total number to 10,004.
The country now has a total of 1,506 recoveries, with 98 more recoveries recorded in the past 24 hours.
A total of 21 new deaths have been tallied, bringing the country’s death toll to 658.
Afghanistan reported 168 more confirmed cases, bringing its total tally to 3,392, according to the country’s Ministry of Public Health.
A total of 104 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak in Feb, an increase of nine over the past 24 hours.
In Japan, the confirmed cases increased by 102 to reach 15,474, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities on Wednesday.
The number excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo.
The nationwide death toll has now reached a total of 584, including 13 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.
Thailand reported one positive case and one fatality.
The total number of confirmed cases in the country stood at 2,989, and the death toll rose to 55.
Laos reported no new case for 24 consecutive days, with the total number of confirmed cases unchanged at 19.
South Korea confirmed two more imported cases compared to 24 hours ago, as of midnight Wednesday local time, raising the total number of infections to 10,806.
It was the lowest daily increase since Feb 18. The daily caseload hovered below 20 for 19 straight days, and the domestic infection logged zero for the third consecutive day.
One more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 255.
India reported, Wednesday, 111 new deaths, and 2,680 more positive cases, taking the number of deaths to 1,694 and total cases to 49,391.
According to officials, so far 14,183 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.
New Zealand reported one more death on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 21 in the country.
Meanwhile, one confirmed and one probable cases were reported on Wednesday after no new cases for two consecutive days, bringing the total number of cases to 1,488.
A second death related to COVID-19 was reported in the Maldives on Tuesday as the country’s case count rose to 557, according to state media.
