MEXICO CITY, Feb 6 (NNN-TELESUR) — A lawmaker for Mexico’s Labor Party, Pedro “El Mijis” Carrizales Cesar Becerra, is recovering from a attack in San Luis Potosi on Monday, Attorney General Federico Garza Herrera said Tuesday.

While traveling back to Santa Rita, two motorcycle riders opened fire on the official’s car. The bullets punctured the windshield and the passenger side door, although no one was injured.

Police are investigating the attack after complaints were voiced by various political groups.

Coordinator of the Workers’ Party, Paola Arreola, said, “I have to say, the recent events and similar incidents which continue to take place in the state are regrettable and I demand that those responsible for these acts be punished.”

Governor Juan Manuel Carreras said, “I express my condemnation of the aggression against the local deputy @mijisoficial, to whom I reiterate my solidarity and the support of the government of San Luis Potosí, to guarantee its security and integrity.”

On January 7, Carrizales announced a proposal to ban bullfighting and cockfighting in his state. Since then he has not stopped receiving threats through social networks and anonymous calls against his family.

The investigation is on the right track, State Attorney General Federico Garza Gerrera told the media on Tuesday.

However, others in the city asked authorities to not dismiss the dozens of other assault and violence cases in favor of the politician.

Commission for Public Safety and Social Reintegration of the State Congress of San Luis Potosí, Beatriz Eugenia Benavente Rodríguez, said, “I am very sorry about what happened, but insecurity is a subject that has permeated the spirits of the Potosinos beyond what happened with the deputy.

“It is important not to pay special attention only because it had to do with a lawmaker or a businessman. Today all Potosinos deserve peace and security in their lives- we do not feel safe in San Luis Potosi.” — NNN-TELESUR
