Salvadoran Police to Protect Almost 1,600 Polling Stations

SAN SALVADOR, Feb 2 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — The National Civil Police (PNC) in El Salvador on Friday confirmed that it will deploy about 23,000 troops to protect nearly 1,595 polling stations during the Feb 3 elections.

The police high command announced that the licenses are suspended until elections conclude. About 5.3 million Salvadorans are convened to vote to elect the new President of the Republic.

The authorities increased their actions at national level to eradicate the wave of violence unleashed by criminal structures against the police, presumably to pressurize the elections.

PNC director general Howard Cotto acknowledged that being in all polling stations, with permanent presence of agents within the facility and support to face any eventuality, will be a challenge.

Supervisions and patrols, vehicle registrations and people are convened for Sunday to prevent any incident, the head of the electoral security plan, commissioner Francisco Parada, said.

Authorities are aimed at enforcing the Prohibition Law coming into effect on Saturday, as well as prevent the entry of armed people to the polling stations, even if they have a license to carry weapons. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
