Firefighters take 140 hours to extinguish Gerik blaze

IPOH, March 22 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Firefighters slogged for about 140 hours before finally extinguishing the blaze at Gunung Kenderong and the surrounding forest area in Kampung Pong, Gerik, about 170 km from here, today.

The Perak Fire and Rescue Department said the blaze, which started at about 9.30 pm on Monday affecting 52.60 hectares, was finally extinguished at 6 pm today. There were no casualties.

“This morning, the Fire Air Unit used water bombing to douse two hotspots at Gunung Kenderong before completely extinguishing the blaze,” it said in a statement today.

Sixty-one personnel from fire and rescue stations in Gerik, Pengkalan Hulu and Lenggong, Forestry Department as well as Malaysia Civil Defence Force were involved in the operation.

It said that firefighters would continue to monitor the location.

No information was given on the cause of the fire.
