BAGHDAD, Mar 18 (NNN-NINA) – Three Katyusha rockets fired, on Tuesday, at the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, an Interior Ministry official said.
The incident took place in the night, when unknown militants fired the rockets at the zone, which houses some of the main Iraqi government offices and the U.S. embassy, the official said.
Sirens were heard in the zone, as the rockets landed inside the zone, but there were no immediate reports about casualties, the official said.
The heavily fortified Green Zone is frequently targeted by insurgents’ mortar and rocket attacks. The roughly 10-square-km zone is located on the west bank of the Tigris River which bisects the Iraqi capital.
Earlier in the day, Iraqi military said, two rockets hit on Monday evening, Bismayah Camp which houses international coalition forces southeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, without giving further details about casualties.
The Bismayah Camp is the second largest military base for the training of Iraqi army, after the al-Taji Camp.
The two attacks came after several rocket attacks targeted military bases housing international coalition forces, including the one on camp Taji that killed two U.S. soldiers and one British service member.
Over 5,000 U.S. troops are deployed in Iraq, to support Iraqi forces in battles against the Daesh, mainly for training and advisory purposes.– NNN-NINA
