ADEN, Yemen, Mar 10 (NNN-SABA) – Pro-government Yemeni forces, detonated around nine tonnes of landmines and explosives, dismantled from several areas in the country’s Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.
According to a press statement of the pro-government forces, “explosives experts detonated around nine tonnes of Houthi-laid landmines, including marine mines, after completing the dismantling campaign conducted in key areas of Hodeidah.”
The statement said, the destroyed landmines were removed from tourist resorts, beaches, fish landing centres, farms and public roads in Hodeidah.
On Sunday, an explosion caused by a landmine, struck a motorcycle in Hodeidah, killing two people.
Houthi fighters planted thousands of landmines and improvised explosive devices (IED’s) before their withdrawal from different areas located along the country’s western coast, according to Yemeni government officials.
The landmines and IED’s continue to pose a threat to people, despite the ongoing efforts exerted, by the experts of the mine-clearing projects.
Reports by humanitarian organisations said, Yemen has become one of the largest landmine battlefields in the world, since World War II.– NNN-SABA
