Five Missing After Boat Capsizes In Northern India

NEW DELHI, Mar 1 (NNN-PTI) – Five people went missing, after a boat carrying them capsized in the Ganga river, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said today (Sunday).

The boat capsized Saturday evening in Mahuji village of Chandauli district, about 364 km southeast of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

“Last (Saturday) evening, a boat carrying people capsized in the river here, although the majority of them managed to swim to safety, unfortunately, five people – three women and two girls – went missing,” a police official posted in Chandauli, said.

“Though we immediately swung into action, so far we are not able to find them.”

Authorities rushed disaster response force personnel to the spot, to carry out searches in the river.

“The search in the river continued throughout the night and was resumed today (Sunday) morning again,” the official said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, expressed grief over the accident.

Reports said the boat was carrying 40 people.– NNN-PTI
