KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Bernama) — Less than two hours before the swearing-in of the new prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed that Muhyiddin Yassin is not the rightful PM because the latter does not have the majority support in Parliament.

Dr Mahathir, the interim Prime Minister, told a press conference that he had the majority support of 114 Members of Parliament, drawn from his coalition Pakatan Harapan, Warisan and several Independent MPs, some from his own party Bersatu.

“Tan Sri Muhyiddin does not have the majority support to become the new prime minister,” he said at the press conference held at the Albukhary Foundation, here.

However,  Dr Mahathir said he was not going to the palace to present the list of 114 MPs backing him.

He also said that they (his group) will ask for an urgent sitting of Parliament to see who has the majority.

Asked how many MPs supported him as at 4pm Saturday, he replied: “Ninety-two.”

“…but when added with me and the others, of course we have the majority. The majority is made up of Pakatan Harapan, Warisan and independent members who have given their support to us, not to PH, (but) to this group of which I am heading,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said that with Muhyiddin being sworn in as the new prime minister, he would have to terminate his position as the interim prime minister.
