JERUSALEM, Feb 20 (NNN-XINHUA) – Israel’s opposition leader, Benny Gantz, vowed that, he will form a coalition government, without Prime Minister Netanyahu, two weeks before Israel’s third election within a year.
Gantz, leader of the centrist Blue and White party, made the remark, during a campaign rally in a convention centre, outside Tel Aviv.
The former Israeli military chief said, his possible coalition partners would be required to sign a document, in which they pledge to oppose any immunity law that Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition is trying to pass, in order to grant Netanyahu immunity from standing trial over a series of corruption charges.
“One who is indicted for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, cannot serve as prime minister,” Gantz said.
Gantz’s Blue and White is predicted to win a narrow victory over Netanyahu’s Likud, in the Mar 2 general election, according to recent opinion polls.
However, both parties do not seem to be able to gain enough votes to establish a majority coalition in the 120-seat parliament.
Israel is heading to the third election within a year for the first time in its history, after the two previous elections yielded inconclusive results, paralysing the country’s political system.– NNN-XINHUA
