Residents inspecting the wreckage
KAMPALA, Feb 15 (NNN-XINHUA) — Fifteen people died on Friday when a speeding commuter van ran into a parked truck in eastern Uganda, police said.
Police spokesperson James Mubi said preliminary investigations show that the driver of the commuter vehicle was speeding when the collision occurred in the district of Mayuge.
Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest traffic death rates, according to police statistics.
The police attribute the high rates of road accidents to reckless driving, speeding, human error, drink driving and overloading. — NNN-XINHUA
