M’sian anti-graft agency applies for warrant of arrest for Jho Low, PSI directors

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has filed for a warrant of arrest against fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low as well as PetroSaudi International Limited (PSI) directors Patrick Andrew Marc Mahony and Tarek Essam Ahmad Obaid in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. 

The MACC filed the application for the arrest warrant at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday and the application was registered in the presence of Magistrate S.Mageswary.

In the application, the MACC also filed charges against Jho Low, Tarek Obaid and Patrick Mahony under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001 and the MACC Act 2009, for the purpose of obtaining the arrest warrant for them.

Under the charge, Low Taek Jho, Tarek Obaid and Patrick Mahony are charged with jointly conspiring with Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to use his position to acquire commissions on Feb 24, 2011 and June 14, 2011.

The charge is made under Section 28(1)© of the MACC Act which provides for a jail sentence of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if found guilty.

In the second charge, Tarek Obaid and Patrick Mahony are charged with involvement in money laundering by accepting an amount of money into the 1MDB-PetroSaudi account channeled through the 1MDB account on Sept 30, 2009.

The charge under Section 4(1) (a) of AMLATFPUAA 2001 provides for a fine of up to RM5 million or jail sentence up to five years or both, if found guilty.
