LIMA, Jan 23 (NNN-ANDINA) — The National Election Board (JNE) and the Organization of American States on Wednesday signed a procedural agreement in order to guarantee the work of the OAS observer mission for the parliamentary elections scheduled for Jan 26.
The agreement will ensure the free movement of OAS specialists on Peruvian territory, as well as their access to all areas used by electoral bodies.
In addition, observers will be given access to voting centers before, during, and after election day.
JNE is committed to put in place the necessary arrangements so that the mission can access all public information regarding the organization, conduct, and supervision of elections.
For its part, OAS mission must be neutral, impartial, and independent in all matters in the fulfillment of its purpose.
Likewise, observers shall inform the maximum electoral body about the irregularities, complaints, and objections concerning the electoral matters that they may observe.
The agreement was signed by JNE Chairman Victor Ticona and OAS Electoral Observation Mission Chief Observer Eladio Loizaga during a ceremony held at the electoral body headquarters in Lima.
As is known, the Executive Branch constitutionally dissolved Congress on Sept 30 and called for parliamentary elections to be held on Jan 26, 2020.
A total 24,799,384 Peruvian citizens are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections both in their home country and from abroad.
The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress. — NNN-ANDINA
