BANGKOK, Jan 21 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Thailand’s Constitutional Court today ruled that the key figures of opposition Future Forward Party (FFP) are not guilty of opposing the country’s constitutional monarchy.
In its ruling, one of the nine judges, Taweekiat Meenakanit, said there is “no clear evidence” of the conspiracy to overthrow the monarchy.
In July last year, lawyer Natthaporn Toprayoon filed a petition that the FFP’s triangular logo signifies an association with the Illuminati, a secret society that conspiracy theorists believe seeks world domination.
The petition accused the party leader of FFP, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, and several FFP party executives of being part of an anti-monarchist movement.
However, the court ruling today does not guarantee the party’s survival as there are outstanding legal challenges ahead.
Local media reported that FFP is facing more than 25 legal cases altogether, which include Thanathorn’s five charges related to a protest at the skywalk near MBK Mall in December last year.
Last month (Dec 2019), Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) asked the Constitutional Court to dissolve the party over loans Thanathorn made to FFP.
In November last year, Thanathorn was disqualified as a Member of Parliament after the court found him guilty of violating election law.
He was found guilty of violating Section 98 (3) of the Constitution by holding shares in V-Luck Media Company while being a candidate in the 2019 Thai General Election.
FFP came in third in the election and became part of an opposition bloc.
