Syrians Protest Against Deteriorating Living Conditions In Southern Province

DAMASCUS, Jan 18 (NNN-SANA) – Under the banner “We Want to Live,” dozens of civilians protested against the harsh economic situation in Syria’s southern province of Sweida, a war monitor reported.

The protest is the third to take place within a few days, as people are angered by the deteriorating economic situation, with the sharp devaluation of the Syrian pound and the skyrocketing prices, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The UK-based watchdog group said, the people held the protest in the Muhafaza Square in Sweida city and in the town of Shahba.

The Syrian pound has lost about 50 percent of its value over the past three months.

The pound is sold in the black market at over 1,000 for one U.S. dollar, a rapid slide from 500 to 600 pounds against the dollar.– NNSANA
