GARISSA (Kenya), Jan 13 (NNN-Xinhua) — Three teachers are feared dead after Somali extremist group al-Shabab attacked a police camp in Garissa county in northeast Kenya early Monday.
Police and witnesses said an unknown number of militants attacked the police camp at around 2 a.m. local time and destroyed a communication mast belonging to mobile operator Safaricom.
Reports said the militants killed three nonlocal teachers and took away one local teacher but spared a nonlocal female nurse due to her gender.
“Initial reports indicate that the militants set the police camp on fire and further tried to bring down the communication mast located about 300 meters away,” said the police.
More police officers have been dispatched to the scene amid fears that the militants could have planted improvised explosive devices on the road, according to the police. — NNN-XINHUA
