MEXICO CITY, Jan 8 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — Mexico will assume the pro tempore presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) from Wednesday Jan 8, during which it will seek to build regional unity.
Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, on presenting the 2020 CELAC agenda, noted that ‘CELAC must convey a message of unity that will allow us to interact with our partners in an articulated manner and reaffirm our priorities and values.’
Mexico’s holding of the presidency of the most Latin American institution of today is in itself an acknowledgement of its importance, because it is a nation and a government in a frontal battle against a socioeconomic and commercial order that has sowed inequality and poverty, sources from the Mexican Foreign Secretariat recalled.
The importance of CELAC is that it is the only regional mechanism of dialogue and political consensus that exclusively gathers all 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and groups 17% of the United Nations members.
Member countries account for 624 million inhabitants and occupy 15% of the Earth’s territory, generating 7.1% of global GDP. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
