Cargo Ship Hits Bosporus Shore In Istanbul, Traffic Not Affected

ISTANBUL, Dec 28 (NNN-ANADOLU) – No casualties were reported, after a Liberia-flagged cargo ship hit the shore, of the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul on Friday, while traffic was not disrupted, authorities said.

The incident occurred near the Rumeli Hisari neighbourhood, on the European side of the city, after the ship, named Songa Iridium, signalled a machine failure, the Istanbul governor’s office said.

“Rescue started with tug boats. No marine or environmental pollution was detected,” said the statement.

Following the accident, three vessels have safely passed through the Bosporus, but one tanker was anchored with its passage suspended, the statement added.

Traffic on the strait would not be disrupted with the incident, the NTV broadcaster said, citing the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The 30-km-long Bosporus, flowing between the Asian and European parts of Istanbul, is among the busiest waterways in the world with a high volume of transit vessels.– NNN-ANADOLU
