BAGHDAD, Dec 28 (NNN-NINA) – Several shells landed Friday, on a military base that houses U.S. troops in Iraq’s northern province of Kirkuk, wounding an Iraqi soldier, the Iraqi military and a security source said.
“Several shells landed on K1 military camp in Kirkuk province,” said a media office, affiliated with Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC).
Hamid al-Jubouri from Kirkuk’s provincial police said, “Five mortar rounds landed in the evening, on a military base named K1, where Iraqi federal police, an army brigade and some U.S. advisers are stationed.”
The mortar attack resulted in the wounding of an Iraqi soldier, al-Jubouri said.
Military bases, housing U.S. troops across Iraq and the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, have been frequently targeted by insurgents’ mortar and rocket attacks.
On Dec 14, the U.S. embassy in Iraq accused Iran’s proxies of carrying out attacks on Iraqi military bases where U.S. troops are stationed.
Over 5,000 U.S. troops are deployed in Iraq, to support Iraqi forces in battles against the Daesh, mainly providing training and advice to the Iraqi forces.
The troops are part of the U.S.-led international coalition that has been conducting air raids against Daesh targets in both Iraq and Syria.– NNN-NINA
