KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Air Selangor is working to get water supply restored as soon as possible in the districts of Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang where water supply has been disrupted since Saturday due to odour pollution.
The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) on Sunday announced that illegal dumping of toxic waste was identified as the cause for pollution at the state’s Semenyih Water Treatment Plant.
As of Monday morning, the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants had yet to resume operations as there were no changes in the odour pollution reading as at 6 am, Bernama reported.
SPAN in its statement on Sunday said the illegal dumping of toxic waste into the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) sewer by irresponsible parties had been determined to be the cause of odour pollution at the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant.
It said the perpetrators will be identified and stern action will be taken against them in accordance with the Water Services Industry Act 2006.
Plant operations were suspended Saturday to prevent the pollution of treated water, affecting more than 1.5 million consumers in parts of Hulu Langat, Sepang, Putrajaya, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Langat.
The commission said it was working with relevant parties including the Selangor Waters Management Authority, Department of Environment, Air Selangor and IWK Sdn Bhd to address the situation so that plant operations can resume soon.
