150 NGOs working with NADMA to help flood victims

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 (NNN-BERNAMA) — A total of 150 non governmental organisations (NGOs) have teamed up with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to reach out via various community level activities to help flood victims.

Nadma deputy director-general (Post-Disaster Sector) Mohamed Zahari Razali said there were currently 150 NGOs that have registered with the national disaster management agency since its inception in 2014.

“They have always been with Nadma through joint courses and now they are in the field, and they play a very active role,” he said when appearing as a guest on a talk programme ‘Bicara Naratif mengenai Tengkujuh: Amaran Dan Kesiapsiagaan’ which was aired live on Berita RTM Facebook page Tuesday night. The discussion was centred on the current monsoon rain season and preparation and ways of facing floods etc.

Mohamed Zahari said Nadma and the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) were also working together to reduce the impact of floods in the country by raising public awareness to respond quickly to any impending disaster.

Nadma is also currently working with a telecommunications company to provide early warnings through MetMalaysia via WhatsApp.

MetMalaysia director-general Jailan Simon said the community needed to be quick to respond when receiving weather warning information from the agency to avoid any untoward incident.
