BANGKOK, Dec 17 (NNN-TNA) – A spike in online scams prompted Thai law enforcement agencies, to launch a campaign against scams via social media.
The threat of internet scamming is becoming more serious in Thailand, as perpetrators exploit sophisticated technologies, said officials and investigators, from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and consumer protection agencies.
“Criminals using social media to lure people into investment schemes had been on the rise,” said Dechawat Chaeng-chuen, of the Office of Consumer Protection Board, “Most of the victims were lured into bogus investment schemes and, therefore, were not protected by consumer protection laws.”
Dechawat said, his office had received thousands of complaints from people, who were invited to invest in investment scams, however were not prosecutable offences under consumer protection law, as investment scams were not related to trading in goods or services.
DSI officer, Piyasiri Watanawarangul warned people, not to fall into advertisements of unreasonable high yields.
He said, before investing money online, it is highly recommended to check into the DSI website, to cross check, whether the online investments’ ads were too surreal or not.– NNN-TNA
