SAMARRA (Iraq), Dec 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Eleven Iraqi fighters were killed north of Baghdad on Thursday when two suicide bombers attacked a base of Saraya al-Salam, an armed group led by Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, the Iraqi army said.
The attack, which also wounded three fighters, was carried out by a suicide terrorist, the army said, using its standard term for Daesh fighters.
Later, a second attacker blew up a car packed with explosives at the same site, killing another four fighters, the media office of Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement.
The statement gave no further details but said that more information was to be released later.
The Saraya al-Salam, or Peace Companies, headed by the Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The militia is stationed in Samarra to protect the holy Shiite shrine where tombs of two Imams are located.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
The security situation in Iraq has improved since Iraqi security forces fully defeated the extremist Daesh militants across the country late in 2017. — NNN-AGENCIES
