Iran Seizes Over 62 Tonnes Of Illicit Drugs In Eight Months

TEHRAN, Nov 27 (NNN-TASNIM) – Iran’s border security forces, have seized over 62 tonnes of different kinds of illicit drugs, over the past eight months, the commander of Iran’s Border Police said.

The seizure of illicit drugs, along Iran’s border, shows an increase of 59 percent, compared to the same period last year, Qassem Rezaee was quoted as saying.

Iran’s border police have been carrying out close cooperation with its counterparts in neighbouring countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman, to fight drug smuggling, Rezaee noted.

Iran has long suffered from drug trafficking, given its location at the crossroads of international drug smuggling from Afghanistan, the world’s top opium producer, to Europe.

Over the past decades, Iran’s eastern and southeastern borders have seen deadly clashes between Iranian security forces and armed drug smugglers.– NNN-TASNIM
