Gen Haftar
WASHINGTON, Nov 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The US State Department has confirmed that senior officials met the Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar to discuss steps towards a ceasefire and a political resolution to the conflict there.
Gen Haftar – whose power base is in eastern Libya – launched an attack on the capital, Tripoli, in April to try to drive out the internationally- recognized government, but the battle has largely settled into a stalemate.
Officials said the US delegation also expressed serious concerns about what it called Russia’s exploitation of the conflict.
Russian mercenaries are reported to have been helping Ge Haftar’s forces, but Russia has denied involvement. — NNN-AGENCIES
