CARACAS, Nov 19 (NNN-Xinhua) — Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez on Monday said conciliation talks with the right-wing opposition have been “making progress” over the two months since the dialogue began.
Rodriguez noted the talks had so far led to ruling socialist party legislators rejoining the National Assembly, where the conservative opposition holds a majority of seats.
Next on the agenda is to restructure the electoral body, said Rodriguez at a gathering with foreign diplomats at the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
“There is a commission already set up to designate a new electoral power,” she said.
Opposition leader Juan Guaido, who appointed himself as interim president earlier this year in a bid to oust President Nicolas Maduro, is participating in the commission, according to Rodriguez.
The government “welcomes” different initiatives for dialogue in Venezuela, including the “Montevideo Mechanism” spearheaded by Mexico and Uruguay, said the vice president.
Venezuela’s ruling party and opposition coalition have been locked in an ongoing struggle for power, which the government insists can only be resolved through negotiation. — NNN-XINHUA
