TRIPOLI, Nov 7 (NNN-Xinhua) — Britain helps dispose of explosive remnants of war in the city of Sirte, some 450 km east of the capital Tripoli, the British Embassy to Libya said.
“The UK with the HALO Trust introduced mechanical clearance to Libya to clear Explosive Remnants of War,” the embassy said in its official Facebook page.
The HALO Trust is an international charity focusing on clearance of explosive debris, especially landmines, since 1988.
“HALO’s deminers are recruited locally in Sirte; locals are able to clear up their own city, enabling people to return to their homes safely,” the embassy explained.
Sirte used to be dominated by Daesh militants. Forces allied with the UN-backed government took over the city and expelled the terrorists in December 2016.
Libya has been plagued by political division and escalating violence ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Years of armed conflict in the country left large amounts of unexploded ordnance, which killed and injured many soldiers and civilians. — NNN-XINHUA
