Malaysia to enhance the role of internet centres nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The 871 Internet centres across Malaysia will take on a more significant role with suitable new human capital development programmes in support of the government’s effort to drive the digital economy, the Parliament was told today.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Eddin Syazlee Shith said that apart from the ICT education and tourism promotion programmes, the centres will promote new programmes such as robotics, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as well as e-learning programmes.

These centres are also involved in community outreach programmes, he said when replying to a question from Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) during the Special Chamber session in the house.

“Generally, the programmes at the Internet centres throughout Malaysia are organised every month, either through collaboration between government and private sector agencies or through the Internet centre supervisors who have been trained to provide training in certain courses to the local communities,” he said.

Eddin Syazlee also said that in Melaka, the Internet centres organise classes/workshops on handicraft, basic robotics, photo editing using Adobe Photoshop, the use of social media applications, online educational games and community programmes.

He said more than one million people use the services offered at the Internet centres across the country.
