RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 27 (NNN-Xinhua) — Brazil has registered 4,507 confirmed cases of measles in 19 states since late June, the country’s Health Ministry said.
In addition, there are also 21,711 suspected cases of the disease.
So far, there were six deaths from measles in the country this year, with two adults and four children, including a 26-day-old infant. Most of the cases and the deaths were registered in Brazil’s most populous state Sao Paulo.
In order to tackle the measles outbreak, the Brazilian Health Ministry have announced a national vaccination campaign and bought extra doses of the MMR vaccines, which immunizes against rubella and mumps in addition to measles.
The campaign will focus on children aged six months to five years in the first phase and adults aged 20-29 in the second.
In 2018, there were 10,330 confirmed cases of measles in Brazil, with 12 deaths. — NNN-XINHUA
