Uzbekistan Kicks Off Election Campaign For Parliament

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Sept 21 (NNN-XINHUA) – Uzbek Central Election Commission (CEC), announced the start of election campaign, for the lower house of parliament.

“Elections will be held for the first time, in accordance with the new Electoral Code, and registered political parties now have the right to nominate candidates, not only in 135, but in all 150 constituencies,” CEC Chairman, Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said, at a press conference.

Five officially registered political parties — the National Revival Party, the People’s Democratic Party, the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, the Adolat Social Democratic Party and the Ecological Party — will compete for 150 seats in the lower house of parliament, he said.

The CEC announced that Uzbekistan’s parliamentary and local council elections are scheduled for Dec 22 this year.

Data from the CEC show that 20 million voters are expected to vote, including two million youth, who will vote for the first time.

Elections for regional, city and district councils will also be held on the same day, the CEC added.

The senate will be formed following the elections for the lower house of parliament. The last parliamentary elections were held in 2014.– NNN-XINHUA
